Grants to reel more Queenslanders into fishing

November 11, 2019

Local community groups will share in $100,000 in Queensland government funding to encourage more people in Pine Rivers to take up fishing.

Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd MP said that Pine Rivers Fish Management Association were among ten recipients from the Queensland government’s first round of the Recreational Fishing Grants Program.

““Earlier this year we invited community and fishing groups to apply for funding for projects that aim to support activities which enhance recreational fishing across the state, and these funds will support Angler Education Events in 2020,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing more locals across our region casting a line and enjoying the experience of fishing in our beautiful waterways, dams and coastlines.”

“Congratulations to PRIMA who are historical custodians of Lake Samsonvale/North Pine dam and have a long history with stocking the lake of fish stocking, managing the boat licences and providing angler education.”

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the Queensland Government is committed to encouraging more people to take up fishing.

“Queenslanders are keen anglers and recreational fishing is an integral part of our lifestyle, but also important for tourism and jobs, attracting fishers from around Australia and the world.

“That is why the Recreational Fishing Grants program is so important.

“The most recent recreational fishing survey found almost 1 million Queenslanders went fishing over the last year, supporting thousands of jobs in the fishing and tourism sectors.

“I look forward to inviting community groups to bid for a total of $200,000 funding when round 2 opens for expressions of interest in 2020”.
